UNLIMITED 4.0 was designed for the 2021 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Sadly, the day after we sent the aerobody off for manufacturing the 2021 BWSC was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UNLIMITED 4.0 was to be the teams first attempt at a three wheeled vehicle, the design was built off many of the lessons learned from the 2019 BWSC whilst also adapting to a radically different set of regulations. Naturally, after all that design work the team was disappointed to see the BWSC cancelled and for UNLIMITED 4.0 to never be manufactured.

With a completed design and a team in need of manufacturing experience, the team decided to manufacture a half scale version of UNLIMITED 4.0. This allowed us to manufacture the aerobody moulds in house using the state-of-the-art Belotti 5-axis CNC machine in the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct (AMP) on our Kingswood Campus, something previously out of scope of the team.

To best prepare the team for the 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, new team members were trained on our in-house composite manufacturing techniques. This hands on experience is invaluable for the team and means we are well equipped to manufacture UNLIMITED 5.0 to the highest standard.

To experiment with new and innovative manufacturing techniques, the UNLIMITED 4.0 scale model features fully 3D printed stainless steel suspension printed on a Markforged Metal X.

UNLIMITED 4.0 was launched to our partners at an event held at Sydney Motorsport Park. It was great to connect with our partners and update them on the progress we have been making for the 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. The day also included some dynamic testing of UNLIMITED 2.0 with many team members getting to drive a solar car for the first time.
